For many people, a house’s pipes and sewers often go unnoticed. Since they are underground, it’s easy to overlook a functioning sewer. However, when problems begin to occur, it’s important to recognize that you may need to make a repair before a small problem becomes big.

The Age of Your Home

A sewer’s duration differs, but normally, a sewer that is over 40 years old may be at risk for needing repairs. Sometimes, a sewer line will be attached to a different part of the home if you live in apartments. Knowing the age of all parts near to your home can greatly help you to determine how old your sewers really are.

Deep Clogs

Most clogs that occur in a house will be able to be easily repaired by accessing it from the drain. The clog may only be a few feet into the pipes. For clogs and blockage that seem to come from farther down into the pipes, you may very well need to have your sewer repaired.

Odors

It may be more obvious, but it goes without saying that foul smells and strong odors can definitely indicate a sewer problem. When you first detect that something is off, check to see where it is coming from. Smells can be pervasive and impact an entire area. If you cause a public nuisance like an odor, you can be held responsible for it. Stay ahead of your sewer’s next repair by monitoring sights and smells that may be telling.

What To Do Next

Once you’ve identified a sewer problem, you can resort to several recourses. Trenchless sewer repair is the most modern way to fix sewer problems. It’s also less invasive. Pipe bursting and pipe lining are two common methods of sewer repair. Pipe bursting is often for more seriously damaged pipes, whereas pipe lining can be used with pipes that aren’t as corroded, and with a smaller surface area.

Trenchless sewer repair also allows you to avoid digging up huge parts of your backyard. Digging can require clearance with the local jurisdiction, and it requires a good deal of knowledge to know.

Trenchless sewer repair lets for your sewer problems get repaired and for your backyard and lawn to not be dug up. Technological innovations in sewer repair mean that you can have your home’s needs serviced without being completely inconvenienced.

3 Common Types of Sewer Pipe

Sewer pipes were first introduced in the 1800s. Before they were introduced, most cities used canals and ditches to move waste away from their city. Sewer pipes were a big factor in reducing disease and removing waste.

Today, there are many types of sewer pipes that have been used around the country. Sewer repairs take on a different face depending on the type of pipe that has been used.

Orangeburg

Orangeburg pipe was first used in the city of Boston in the mid-1800s. This type of pipe has a very soft construction so is vulnerable to collapse. The plumbing industry no longer uses this type of pipe.

Cast Iron

Cast iron pipes were used in the 1900s in Philadelphia. Cast iron pipe come in various diameters and two different weights. Service weight was used for normal residential applications, and extra heavy weight was used for industrial type applications. Used as early as the 17th century, cast iron pipe is susceptible to rust and needs replacement over time.

PVC

PVC pipe is manufactured in a variety of sizes and can be manufactured to special order when necessary. PVC pipe can easily be joined together. That makes it an excellent product for sewer lines. It was invented as a by-product from a failed experiment. It was first used in Europe in the 1930s. By the mid-1950s, it was being used in the United States on a regular basis. PVC is virtually shock proof and is great for earthquake and disaster prone areas of the country. PVC is resistant to bacteria. It is the most widely use pipe in this century.

PVC pipe is easy to repair. You can cut the pipe with a hacksaw. You coat the inside of the coupling and with a sealant and simply slip onto the new pipe. You can then secure the new pipe to the old pipe by slipping the other end of the coupling onto the old pipe. After sealing around the connection, you have a leak proof seal once the sealant dries. Be sure to follow the manufactures directions for drying time of the sealant before running water through the pipe.

As you can see, the advancement in the types of pipes used for sewer lines has made repair less frequent. When repairs are needed the repair time is cut dramatically and the ease with which it can be done makes it an ideal do-it-yourself repair.

How to Repair Sewer Pipes

Broken sewer pipes are the cause of much anxiety and expense for homeowners. Many homeowners are afraid to take on the responsibility of repairing a damaged sewer pipe. With some basic plumbing skills do-it-yourselfers can repair broken sewer pipes with very little trouble. The following are instructions for what you will need to do to fix a broken sewer pipe:

  1. Make sure you have the proper tools. You will need a shovel, a wet concrete saw and a sledgehammer and pry bar. Never start a job without the proper tools.
  2. Get access to the broken pipes. For pipes under a concrete slab, us the concrete wet saw to score the concrete. Score the concrete in squares and use the sledgehammer break up the square from the inside. Use a shovel to get access to pipes below grade.
  3. Determine what type of repair needs to be made. For small holes, you can use a gasket and clamp while a large break will require you replace a length of pipe with flexible pair couplings.
  4. For repair clamps you need to remove the dirt surrounding the area of the punctures. Place the clamp’s gasket directly over the puncture. Open up the repair clamp and place it over the gasket and then close the clamp. Tighten the clamp bolts with a wrench. Test the connection by running water through the pipes and check for leaks.
  5. Using Flexible Couplings

  6. Remove the portion of the pipe that has the cracks. Use a reciprocal saw to cut the pipe. You can also use a hacksaw. Clean the cut ends with a file.
  7. Cut a portion of new pipe to fit the space that was left when you cut the damaged pipe. Cut the new pipe to size.
  8. Slide a flexible coupling over the old pipe on either side of the gap. Hold the new length of pipe in place and slide the couplings toward the gap. The coupling should cover both side of the joint between the new and old pipe.
  9. Tighten the clamps with a screwdriver. Check for leaks by running water through the pipes.
  10. The repairs should be supported by backfilling underneath the repairs with earth.

It’s a good idea to cover the repair overnight before you rebury the sewer pipes to make sure leaks do not occur after a few hours. Once you are confident that the repair has been successful you can rebury the pipe.

How to Use a Plumber’s Snake

As a home owner, one of the best purchases you can ever make is the purchase of a plumber’s sewer snake.

A plumber’s sewer snake is used to clear clogs by working the flexible wire like tool into the drain. They have a hand crank at one end and an auger at the business end to help clear any blockage. Motorized versions of a plumber’s snake are also available for home use.

You can also buy a toilet snake that is specifically designed to clear toilet clogs.

When Should You Use a Sewer Snake?

After using drain cleaners and failing to clear the clog, a plumber’s sewer snake may be the tool to use. The auger at the end of the snake can be used to break up stubborn clogs in sinks, tubs and toilets.

Drain cleaners have caustic chemicals so be careful not to splash while using the snake. It is a good idea to use some sort of eye protection if you have used drain cleaners in the drain prior to using the snake.

How to Use the Snake

Always use protective non-slip gloves when using a plumber’s snake. Keep a bucket and towel close by when using the snake. It cannot be emphasized enough that eye protection is essential if you have used caustic drain cleaners prior to using the plumber’s snake.

After putting the auger end into the drain, turn the handle clockwise. You will be able to feel the auger make contact with the clog. At this point, you can pull the auger back slightly and then continue to turn the handle clockwise. This will help the auger break through the clog. Pull the auger out when the drain is cleared and dump the clog that is attached to the auger into the bucket.

Make sure you never throw large amounts of food down your kitchen drains. Hair is a real problem in bathroom drains, so periodic cleaning with hot or boiling water poured down the drains is essential to preventing future clogs.

The plumber’s snake is an easy tool to use and can clear most blockages that occur in the home.

Having a plumber’s snake in your home is probably the best investment you can make. You will never regret purchasing one.

Sewer Line Repair

Sewer line repair is not an easy task. You need professionals to do the repairs. We start sewer line repairs by first detecting the signs of a drain problem which can be, for instance, as is observed in slow flushing toilets. Then we have to determine the extent of the blockage. Whether it affects just one fixture or the entire building or even the main drain line? If all the fixtures are flushing slow then you are sure that you have to shift attention to the main sewer line and its repairs.

If the fixture had a large waste and water flushed down then the blockage would be sudden and flooding right up to the bowl’s edges. At this stage it makes sense to deploy a standard plunger to see if its pressure can make any impact on reducing the blockage. In many cases it may but the block would remain still and water would exit slowly; you will have to now shift to locating the drain and the distance at which it lies. Any plumber by manual inspection of the network of drain pipes can help locate the blockage and its distance from affected fixtures for the sewer line repair. If the drain pipes are buried then a measured amount of digging may have to be done for the diagnostic purposes.

Once the drain blockage is located we can attempt the clearance of the same by using a power snake or drain auger. Entry is to be made at the coupling where inspection pointed with certainty the nearest blockage. We have to select the head of power snake that can maneuver easily in the pipe which still has teeth enough to grab or dismantle the estimated blockage. If this also produces negative results then we have to look out for possibilities which include a broken drain line, a root-clogged sewer line, or even damaged or collapsed sewer lines.

In case the sewer line needs replacement we have to excavate the old sewer line using backhoe. Please remove ground slabs in such a manner that they could be re-fixed easily. We have to take care that detachment of sewer line from main septic spot is to be done by hand so that delicate placements of the system are not disturbed. It is advisable to place outdoor ports for cleanout every 15 feet or so in the new sewer line. We have to ensure that new sewer line is coupled, sealed and greased at all joints. Black line on the right hand pipe section indicates that all joints have been made complete. It is to be ensured that “female” end of the pipe is the next downhill section so that future clogging is avoided. It is also advisable to use hub-less smooth plastic line connectors to legacy main sewer lines so that flows remain uninterrupted in future. If you feel you need sewer line repair, call on a professional right away!
